FAQ

Does Korg still support the M/T Series Synths? No.

Where can I get a manual for my synth? Head to the Manuals page.

Does Korg still make Sound Cards and Disks for the M/T's? No, but they can still be found used.

Are M1 sound cards compatible with the T-Series Synths? Yes.

What M/T Sound Card Sets are the best? I've been thinking about buying one of the Korg Synth Card Sets, 1, 2, or 3, but I'm not sure which one to buy. I don't want to waste my money on a Sound Card Set I may not like. If you're serious about expanding your synth with Sound Card Sets then check out Card Set Master. It's the best source of Sound Card Set info, data, and resources.

Do you have to power down an M/T Series synth in order to remove RAM and ROM cards? No, so long as they are not selected or in use. To remove a PROG/SEQ DATA Card press the INT Button first to switch to Internal RAM. By doing so no electrical connection is made with the card and is therefore safe to remove.

Is there any way to add new sounds to my synth without buying sound cards? Yes. Programs & Combinations can be transferred to the synth via Midi. Check out Midi Newbie and Sysex Guide for more details.

Where can I get the factory patches for my synth? They're right here on this site. Just head to the Factory Files page.

What is the key combination that will reset my synth with the factory patches? Only the M3R has the factory patches stored in ROM. Do a reset on any of the other synths and you will delete all internal memory. You need to load the factory patches back into these synths via Midi. Head to the Factory Files page to get the patches.

OK, I understand resetting my synth will delete all internal memory but I still need to reset my synth. How do you do it? The Tips page has the details.

My synth won't receive any sysex data via Midi. What's wrong? System Exclusive has been disabled. To enable it go to the Global Section and about midway thru you'll see a page called MIDI FILTERING. Change the EXCL value so it reads EXCL:ENA.

I've enabled Sytem Exclusive but my synth still won't receive any sysex data. What's wrong? Memory Protection is enabled. Go to the Global Section and turn off Memory Protection for Programs, Combinations, etc.

My Programs all say INIT PROG and my Combinations all say INIT COMBI. What happened? Is my synth broken? It sounds like your synth was either reset or your battery ran out of juice. Load in some patches. If they "disappear" when you switch off power your battery is dead. It will have to be replaced.

Why won't MIDI sequences I download from the internet play on my M/T synth? Because M/T's aren't General Midi compatible. See the GM page to learn how to make your M/T as General Midi compatible as possible.

How do I hook up my computer to my synth? Head to the Midi Newbie page for info.

How to I send files between my synth and my computer? See the Sysex Guide for details.

My synth sounds out of tune. How do I tune it? The M/T's have Master Tune, Key Transpose, and Scale Type options. Any one of these could be causing your problem so check them all.

Why does my volume slider make scratchy noises when I move it? Over time dust builds up in the slider and interferes with the electrical contacts. This interference is the noise you hear when you move the slider. You can buy a spray can of contact cleaner that will fix this. In most cases the volume knob will pop right off. Care should be taken to protect the surface of the synth from the cleaner.

My synth will not make any sound at all when I press the keys! Any idea what's wrong? The Global section has a setting called Local which can be set to either ON or OFF. If it's set to OFF your keyboard won't make any sound when you press the keys. Change Local to ON to regain control. Some external sequencers will automatically turn Local OFF so that might be how the setting got changed.

All or some of the Drum sounds are silent. What's wrong? Each drum can be routed or panned individually to each of the 4 outputs. It is possible to pan the drums to outputs C or D and not have those outputs routed to outputs A or B (or the headphones) in a particular patch. Check the Drum panning and also the Effects settings.

My RAM Card no longer works. Can it be fixed? In most cases RAM Cards stop working because of a dead battery. To check if your RAM Card still works power up your synth with the RAM Card inserted. Go to the Global Section and format the card. You should now be able to access the card. If you can't try gently cleaning the contacts with a non abrasive cleaner and repeat the procedure.

If the card works fine after being formatted but no longer functions after you shut down and power up then it's the RAM Card battery. The battery is easy to replace and most Manuals have a nice illustrated step by step guide on how to do this.

The buttons on my M1 are not working. Can these be fixed? The round buttons on the M1 are known to give out over time. The rectangle buttons seem to hold up pretty well though. If you need to replace a button first try your local service center to see if they can do it. If this is not an option or you want to do it yourself you will at least need to obtain the part from a service center or dealer. If you can't get the part try switching the broken button with one that's not used very often. The BANK HOLD and COMPARE buttons are hardly ever used and probably work fine. Check first.

When you open up the M1's case you'll have to work your way up to the top to get at the buttons. It's a bit of a bear and you'll have to remove a few things to get there. BE CAREFUL! Also, while you have everything apart, you might as well do yourself a favor and change the battery so you won't have to open up the case again when the battery eventually dies out.

I can't save new data to the diskette drive on my T-Series. Any ideas what's wrong? If the drive can read from another diskette then your new diskette probably isn't formatted to work with the T. The Manual gives complete details on diskette formatting.

I need to replace the Internal Battery in my synth. Is this hard to do? With some M/T's it can be. Check out the Battery section for more info.

I need to replace my RAM Card Battery. See the Battery section.

Is it possible to add a diskette drive to my M1? Not to the actual synth itself but you can "attach" one via Midi.

I don't have a computer in the proximity of my synth. Is there another way to transfer patches? Yes, you'll need either another synth that has a disk drive or a MIDI Data Filer. A MIDI Data Filer is a device with a diskette drive that can send/receive files via Midi.
